I made this a while ago and it was tuned for the 155 MHz range, used for a weather radio I have. On Easter, I ran across this home brew and decided I wanted to see if I could improve my reception range.
I live in East islip and have only my rs 800 duck. I, from here, lost fdny, nypd, doitt uhf, ncpd , ncfd, I was only getting scpd trs, a good amount of uhf fire depts (barely got vhf) and maybe Mta pd if they were close....
I cut the elements from 18' to 6 1/2. I left the 1/2 to make the round ends to avoid losing an eye. So it resonates around 460MHz. It kinda gets funky from here and I know the more connectors is bad, but, sma to bnc, bnc to F, F to F, to pl 259 to pl 259 chassis mount that the ant is constructed of. All this attached to my Br330t. I did find pl 259 to bnc and its on the way..
Results are very good. From in my apartment, I can hear NYPD, FDNY Uhf. Some Nassau fd's, and NCPD if scanners in the right spot. I now pick up fire depts I never used to and others that were fuzzy are pretty clear.
Today I was in Levittown and reception was not great, due to this being cut for 460Mhz, but was actually listening to fres and special 1 on the scpd trs.
Ground Plane
Use a UHF chassis- mount connector and #10 or #12 solid copper wire (regular house wiring stuff or welding rod). Approx. length of all elements: 120MHz=23", 155MHz=18" 460MHz=6", 855MHz=3-1/4"

You know the old expression - something is better than nothing. You replaced your "nothing" rubber duck antenna with something you can move to a better location to get better reception. A simple wire cut to the proper frequency might have worked well too. Many hams use the ground plane you described as a decent homebrew antenna. There is no gain, but by placing the antenna outside on your roof you've increased your range because "something" is better than "nothing" This is most likely what was built [link]

So, from east islip, with stock ant I could not hear nassau pd or east farmingdale fire depts. With this antenna, if I went outside, I could just get them. Now, I added my amp and effd and nassau police are coming in with 2 to 3 bars and just a little static. I wish my pc set up was near my front window.

This has a wal wart that powers it with 12 volts 200milliamps. I need to make a 12 cig plug for it that puts out 200 milliamps and use it in my truck..I must say it rocks... |
