Another mystery is the LIRR use of their talkgroups I had a idea that they would possibly use them for something like snow plowing on the tracks/snow storm operations in order to divert traffic away from the main LIRR channels - but i suppose at that point they would just use the conventional railroad maintenance/unit to unit channels...
I would also guess that maybe once upon a time the LIRR did radio checks on said talk groups just in case for the event of some OEM/ Inter-op type deal...

In suffolk, they dont have a tg on the suffolk trs. But they have the ability to talk on command band as well as each precinct. Well atleast the 3rd pct and the first pct.. |

I have had the system open since the blizzard and i didnt notice the MTA on any of their talkgroups so i really dont think its in their best intrest to even keep or maintain such radios...
I would still consider that possibly some of the MTA dispatch centers have 800mhz radios for OEM roll calls so maybe i will catch them on one of the OEM talkgroups sometime...

So it seems that basically the remaining active users of the EDACS system are OEM, NUMC/ Corrections, Nassau County Highways/DPW, Other various Incorporated Village DPW and the occasional Fire Dept. activity
Its no question this system is on its way out - but it will definitely take some time because while it seems some agencies have transitioned- the remaining users on the system are rather large agencies with a lot of radios that will need to be replaced...

I've heard that Nassau is swapping out the EDACS system for a Motorola P25 system. It will share the same back end as the UHF system and that is supposed to make maintaining the system and interop a little easier.
I think the idea is to have all of public safety on UHF, and the rest of the county on the 800. |

I guess the big question is will the EDACS system more or less just "convert" to P25 or will it become the 700mhz system?...
As far as infrastructure goes i wouldnt say that the EDACS system is "terrible" - but i have heard complaints of rather lackluster coverage which is understandable being that its a 5 site system to cover the entire county as opposed to 5 sites alone in southern/central Nassau as well as a few more sites in the oyster bay/nothern nassau parts of the P25 system..

04-046 is without a doubt something at the jail. Most likely a maintenance talk group. Most transmissions are requests to have the back gate opened, a loading dock delivery, or a garbage door. One call I logged was "Garbage door is secure, all inmates are in.". |

^ yep i would just mark it down as "Jail maintenance" 04-016 is in the database as Jail maintenance and it is still in use - but i suppose 04-046 is just somewhat a alternate TG for maintenance or perhaps for another area of the jail...

So here is an interesting one. I'm wondering if it is an issue with UniTrunker or some way that the system is configured..... Maybe you guys can help me out.
Please put in a separate group Talk Groups 02-017 and 04-013. These show up at talk groups on my logging with a single radio id. The radio ID on 02-017 is 2571 and the radio id on 04-013 is 2319. When you listen to one of the other talk group, you hear a one sided conversation, but when you put both talk groups together, you get both sides of the conversation! UniTrunker logs this as an Individual conversation, but also logs it down with a talk group.
I'm just wondering if UniTrunker is logging the individual call to 2 different talk groups, or if there is some sort of funny talk group on each radio that one transmits on and the other receives? That setup would make no sense to me. |

Phil,
Is this something I could do with a hardware scanner or do I need SDR or some other form of software? |
