Hi Phil,

I've often seen you comment here and on the other site about using one of these for P25 reception. I know very little about them so I was hoping you could help me understand more about them:

1. Are these radios or scanners?
2. If they are radios, can they be used as scanners?
3. When they stop on a transmission can they display alpha tags showing TGID tag, system name etc?

I'm always looking for a better mousetrap for P25 so if these work better than a scanner I might want to pick one up.

Thanks.
John

The G4 / G5 is really a pager. But you could load it up with several scan lists and it will act as a scanner. You cannot transmit with them.

The software is still in beta, and not all of the functionality is in the pager yet, but it does show UID when the pager is receiving a P25 Trunked transmission.
The bandsplit on the UHF version goes from 450 - 512, so you could put most of the local FD's in the radio, plus NYPD and FDNY. You also have 700/800 included so you can put any P25 Trunk system in there as well, as long as it is Phase 1 (for now). They will not work on any other type of trunked system.

I have my G5 demo unit setup now to "scan" my local area Fire Districts, and it tones and records just as a normal pager. I have in the Nassau P25 system to listen for Fire Marshal. It will listen to the control channel on the new Suffolk System, but since the G5 doesn't do Phase 2 yet, there isn't anything I can pick up.

I've heard that in areas where Simulcast can be an issue, that the G4 and G5 outperform a scanner.

Hi Phil,

I understand this is a very old thread but I’m sure a ton of things have changed with the Unication g5. My understanding after doing some (very recent but brief) research is that it now supports P2 transmissions, which if true is great. However, can you tell me a little more about this scanner in “easy to read” form please:

1. Can it scan multiple trunked systems at once? Say I want to scan Nassau’s new 700MHz system for EMS activity and the new MRRS system - can I do that?
2. Can I listen to ANY trunked system and ANY conventional system/channels at the same time?
3. I’m not sure about this part but I read somewhere that the g5 can only hold 64 TGs in one “knob” position, but there are 8 positions on the “knob” but you can’t scan (64x8) = 512 TGs at one time, just 64. Is that correct? If it is, then is there any way to override this limitation with software or are you stuck with the knob positions?
4. Can you put in alpha tags for UIDs? If so, what is the max number of characters?
5. Same question for RIDs as #4?
6. Last but not least: Can this pick up DMR?

Thanks for any help here Phil!

Phase II was added to the G series pagers quite a while ago.

As to the rest of your questions, specifically the first few, the answer is "no" currently. That is all about to change, as Unication is coming out with new firmware in the (near?) future to drastically expand the capability of these pagers to make them more scanner-like.

I would suggest looking at this thread to get a better sense of what is coming.

And be prepared to pay extra for that firmware upgrade once it's finally released, as all indicators point to " Trunking Free Scan" being a premium set of features.

Thanks very much for this update!

Looking at it now, I think that if I do pull the trigger on a Unication it would be for the sole purpose of using it as a dedicated P25 trunking scanner. As it stands, my Uniden BCD396XT is a fantastic conventional scanner, and it even does very well with single-channel digital as well. It lacks in LSM reception and of course cannot even touch Phase II. My other scanner, the PRO-668 with the "unofficial" DMR update, is pretty good most of the time on Phase I and Phase II trunked systems but of course it is still plagued with LSM issues, which will never be resolved with the current design architecture of these scanners. I will just go with the Unication for what it excels at.
Looking forward to the introduction of the new firmware update!
