If the plan goes forward, the NYPD would join other police organizations across the country — including the Port Authority Police Department and the Nassau County Police Department — and federal investigation agencies. Rumors had been swirling for some time that the radios would be encrypted. While attending a Dec. 12 press conference in Brooklyn, NYPD Assistant Chief Thomas Conforti of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information’s office told amNewYork that “all police radios will be encrypted sometime in 2020, just like Nassau County, you won’t be able to hear anything.” “There has been an influx of emerging technology in law enforcement communications which the NYPD is surveying. The Department’s prime focus remains ensuring public safety best practices and ongoing improvements,” added Sergeant Jessica McRorie, an NYPD spokesperson, in an email to amNewYork. | LOL I posted about this early in the year and all of the experts on RR called it "fake news". Even posted the actual NYPD memo that was issued out last year. But hey, what do I know, right??? |

ha i remember when you posted the news about that and boy it brought out the best in people ..lol--well seems in the article that none of the brass even heard of this and also the mayor or the state a/g---hmmmmm i bet they dont--lets see how there gonna tackle the news media outlets on the silence and keep the media in the dark on reporting

Oh well - we will no longer be able to hear dispatchers screaming about open mics or hear 5 cars going to a "EDP" 10 year old child who doesnt want to go to school in the morning
But really even a unencrypted P25 system with perhaps just a few encrypted "high profile" channels would suit the NYPD just fine with the fake/stolen radios problems they have had in the past
Even if someone got a hold of a P25 radio with intent to mess with NYPD they would end up quite disappointed and many dollars short when dispatch bricks the radio
It sounds like they went over a few heads with this one - should be interesting...

On a more serious note: It’s getting more and more tedious to enjoy the scanning hobby, what with everything moving in the direction of encryption.
We’re considering moving to FL late next year. When we do that I’ll probably give up the hobby altogether. From what I read there is virtually no unencrypted PD or FD to listen to in Florida, and buses & utilities aren’t gonna cut it for me. |

Sites like RR are full of alarmists and crybabies who drone on and on about encryption this and encryption that. Yes, the reality is that encryption is here to stay, because it's very easy to enable as agencies and counties move to digital systems, and in some cases it's either very cheap or free (ADP algorithm in particular). And yes, live streaming is often the reason for it happening, or at least it's certainly a very convenient excuse.
But often the reality is not as dire as some make it out to be. There are plenty of P25 systems in Florida that have all Fire in the clear, and some even have *gasp* most Police talkgroups in the clear also! It totally depends on the area, so I would suggest taking a look at the RRDB to see what the reality is, and tune out the same dozen or so alarmists on RR who want everyone to believe that 100% encryption will be happening tomorrow. |
