| And it was called in by a trooper. Did the fire house not have a working fire alarm system? |

It happens more often than you might think. I've personally responded to once such incident at a neighboring dept's station. Not a fun call to answer, as you might imagine.
Unfortunately many firehouses in the northeast are very old, and many are not sprinklered. Some may not even have a fire alarm system, especially if it was never required by local code.
There's a lot of stuff that likes to burn in a firehouse, not the least of which are the apparatus and equipment itself. When you consider just how many thousands of feet of wiring each truck has tying all the components together, coupled with a ~60 gallon tank of diesel fuel, gasoline cans in the compartments for the saws and portable generators/lights...it's a wonder there aren't more of these types of fires.
Our dept had two trucks catch fire due to short circuited wiring. Thankfully neither were very serious, and both were while on-scene, not in the wee hours of the morning parked inside the firehouse. |

there were pictures in the firewire and nassau county historians page before any fire supression rig was on scene--
if you find them online look carefully at the rig on the far right was fully involved--this was the cause of the fire--definately looked electrical in nature from inside the cab |
