Suffolk is unique.. the powers have elected to keep things “clear” thus far. I am a believer that most primary communications should be in the clear for the sake of transparency. However...
All of these new radios are equipped with encryption and all it will take is a push of a button (literally) with OTAP.
I really hope that those of whom rebroadcast the county’s feeds online wind up taking them down. One wrong fart, one tiny story, one drug dealer that’s found to have it on their phone regardless of how effective or ineffective, regardless if the offender can actually decipher what they’re saying, AND EVERY POLITICIAN WILL push for the press of that button.
Remember, the police departments (unfortunately) answer to the politicians. If the leaders in our state feel that it would pose a threat to their efforts, they will make noise.
Let’s not give them a reason to ruin a great resource. Let’s stand together to keep this hobby great. Let’s show these people that the radio hobby is filled with decent people and that we’re on THEIR side.

I feel the same way as far as feeds go but its not just those providing feeds. Many news stations have scanners and get the same info and write about it. It also seems news agencies go to the feeds archive at radio reference / broadcastify as I have seen and read stories where they credited radio reference / broadcastify for the audio recordings.
Another thing that's just wrong is the whackers or buffs that still chase ambulances and fire trucks and stand there with their scanners blasting right there at the scene. I am not saying there is anything wrong about going to see a 5 alarm fire, as I do this on occasion, but bringing a scanner and being that cool guy telling everyone in the crowd that they just found a dead body, well that's not cool.
There are some fire depts that utilize encryption. Close to 140 of them. Go to this link and search fire. Scroll thru your search to see all fire depts that were reported at, at least one point as being encrypted.

| Also worth noting, while this site and broadcastify do not stream tac or sensitive channels, there are plenty of folks streaming to their own websites what ever they wish. |

The county isn’t concerned about the media listening in. They are concerned about the internet listening in. Anyone can get a phone and use it. Actual scanner devices though, that’s a whole separate ballgame.
I’d encourage those that are putting up their feeds to change them to FDs/EMS soon before the decision is made to utilize the existing encryption capabilities. Don’t stay I didn’t warn you. The roll out is very close to completion. |

| Trust me, the county cares what the media hears. What the media hears, the media reports. When its something the police don't want made public, they care. |
