| so i'm looking at a cheap handheld scanner for christmas, the Uniden BC72XLT. i just dont know if this is a good choice for what i need.
i live on Long Island but i go to school in boston, so i want something where i can switch between listening to LI frequencies and Boston Frequencies... is this hand held a good choice for me? Uniden BC72XLT
Note: i don't want to spend too much more than $100

| As long as boston isn't digital this scanner will work. It is a little over your price range but this is the upgrated version of the PRO-97 which I have and it works great. [link] ***This is the PRO-164 scanner***

| The BC72XLT is a good entry level scanner. It has 100 channels in 10 banks, and covers most of the bands that would be required in a scanner. The radio only requires 2 AA batteries, and that is something I look for..
Some things to note about this radio: It does not have alpha-tags It does not do PL or DPL It does not do any type of Trunking (You can't listen to Suffolk PD)
If you are not interested in Suffolk PD on Long Island, you are ok.
While in Boston, you will be able to monitor the local PD and FD with out any problems. You will not be able to listen to the following, since they are on trunk systems: Boston City Services (OEM, Parking, Traffic, County Ops, Housing, Code, etc) Boston University Mass. State PD.
If you are not interested in listening to any of the above, then it would make a nice starter radio.
The link Justin put above is for the PRO-164. I believe it replaced the PRO-97 The Pro-164 will do PL/DPL, Trunk, and it may alpha-tag as well.. It also upgrades you from 100 channels on the 72xlt to 1000 channels.
OR - you can take your chances and buy a raffle ticket and have a chance of winning a PRO-528
