| WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- As flames made their way through a West Palm Beach apartment building, a teenage resident realized there was still a family still inside an second floor apartment. Without a ladder, or any other way to get up, he climbed on a friend's shoulders and broke the window. The apartment's resident, Nicole Ponder, tells NewsChannel 5, she didn't realize there was a fire, so when she heard the glass break she thought it was an intruder. She quickly rushed her mother and two children into a utility apartment where they hid. 19-year-old Gary Jackson made his way through the apartment searching for the family. When he found their hiding space, Ponder said she yelled at him to leave. Ponder explains, "We're telling him, 'Go on; the cops looking for you.' All the while he's telling us, 'No, you gotta come with me 'cause the building's on fire!' Luckily for the bravery of that kid, if not we - my 6-year-old, my 3-year-old and my mother would have been dead in a utility closet." The fire damaged four apartments in Ponder's building. Eight people were hospitalized including a firefighter. One of the injured people jumped from a second story window and was rushed as a trauma alert to Saint Mary's Medical Center. The others, including a woman residents say is 8 months pregnant, are being treated at local hospitals for minor burns and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
