How do you know who they are if they are encrypted?

There are several ways on which I know who is where.
1. Anonymous Tip
2. Watching the Trunk System and listening for any simulcast activities
3. Making an educated guess based on previously logged UIDs/RIDs, or finding a particular pattern on the system.
Ex.  Village police departments are alphabetical and move up the TG table by 100.
4. Log everything - including audio transmissions. Sometimes you'll get lucky and log an unencrypted transmission on a talk group and confirm.
Ex. "Any Hempstead Unit for a ........" or "Lake Success unit xxx transmitting a 10-78"

I keep two home patrols on Trunk Discovery mode, and keep the PRO-106 feeding PRO96COM, which passes the unencrypted activity to a BCD996T.

Updates for Early April:

This week I also noticed a DATA only Unit on the trunk system. Channel Usage has changed from Voice only to channels that are now doing Voice and Data. As of today's date, I'm only seeing a single RID transmitting data only packets.

I noticed the Data transmissions (I only see them using 502.400 a s the control channel) Two radio ID's 1923612 and 1923712 - I'm guessing these are Ambulances 2361 & 2371. I wonder if this has something to do with Medical Control.

The other cc 502.700 I am not seeing the data

You are correct. 1923610 is 2361 Mobile, 1923611 is 2361 Portable (HT), and 1923612 is the Medcom Radio.
The Medcom Radio is used for both Voice and Data with the Medcom talk group. I would guess they are feeding telemetry into the trunk system now. Every voice channel on the system has a Data packet log.

I've logged 2351, 2361, and 2371 on Medcom 1 and 2. Medcom 3 so far has just been for testing.

If I have some time, I'll post up some audio clips during the week.

Why are we only seeing that activity on the one control channel?

I don't believe both sites are operating in simulcast. I've seen times where talk groups show up on one site, but not the other.

Here are the P25 Trunk System Logs for April 2014.

Items to note, NCPD Ambulances have moved over to the P25 system for notifications to Medcom.  There are 3 talk groups in use.  6001 is the main calling talk group.   If the Medic needs to pass details, request medications, etc, they will move over to 6002 or 6003.   The interesting part here is Medcom has a very hard time hearing the trunk system.   Medcom will ask the Paramedics to repeat their last transmission, stating sometimes that the Paramedic cut out or is coming in very "scratchy" or 1x1.   It seems to me that the location of Medcom's radios isn't in an optimal place.

Another thing to note this month is all of the voice channels on the system have been marked with the ability to transmit data packets as well.   I will see the Radio IDs (RID) aka Unit IDs (UID) of the "Back of the Bus" radio for NCPD EMS start bursting data on the talk group.  I assume that since I see the radios transmitting data packets after a voice converstation to Medcom, that these radios are also sending patient telemetry.

Finally, the system is transmitting Phase 2 data.   It is broadcasting that it can do Phase 2 on the 3rd frequency plan on the system, which is in the 700 block.   That doesn't mean that there is anything up there yet, but it does seem like they could roll Phase 2 at any time they wanted to.   Right now all talk groups are Phase 1 talk groups, and anything UNENCRYPTED can be monitored by any P25 trunked scanner.

I have removed some of the talk groups that seem to have been logged in error off my list.
(edit 5/6/14)- I decided to put those talk groups back into the list - I'm seeing some activity on them today.   Colors removed from spreadsheet due to formatting issues with Hex values)

Phil,

Thanks again. Funny you posted this today, I was actually going to post the same things about Medcom 6001. Three times yesterday dispatchers asked ambulances to repeat their transmissions. I even heard an ambulance say "just so you know I was hearing you 5 by 5 the whole time you were asking me to repeat my info". He actually sounded a little annoyed.

I'm still hearing comms on the conventional 462.xxxx medcom channels, I assume these are non-NCPD agencies.

Aside from 6001 and 6002 I haven't been lucky enough yet to hear any other comms on this system.

FD is still using Medcom 9 & 10. If Medcom has a problem with PD on the Trunk System Talk Groups, they will move back to the "old" Medcom Channels.

Nassau Firecom is using their talk groups regularly to dispatch out HazMat and Fire Marshall now. You should hear plenty of activity on there. Great Neck North Water is busy during normal operating hours during the work week

I'll have to double check my TG entries in my scanner.
