Anyone know if SCPD Aviation is always up in the air during the week? I remember hearing that they were up during the week during certain hours and on call after hours. Anyone have info on this?

I think Nassau has their based manned on the ground and when requested, they fire up the chopper. Whereas in Suffolk, I think they have 1 chopper in the air at all times during the daytime hours. I was trying to confirm both counties.

I believe SCPD aviation base is manned & on call 24/7. I don’t believe they keep a bird in the air it would not be coast effective for them to keep it up. If my information is right a helicopter maintains coast is a lot higher then plane.

I know they cost a ton just to fire up the engines. I cant remember the situation when I first posted this but I thought I remember hearing they had 1 ship in the air during a certain time period. I can see how this would cost a lot of money to do. Thanks for the replies.

SCPD has 2 bases now. 1 at MacAurthur like they always had, and they also have Helicopter 3 based out of Gabreski Airbase in Westhampton to service the East End. I believe the east base is staffed 24/7

If memory serves me correctly, the East base is for operations during the summer months. This must be due to the east end social gatherings. That is perhaps where I thought I heard the 24/7 ops. Thanks Taz

I'm wondering if things have changed regarding aviation being up 24/7. I think they are running 2 birds on a regular basis and pull a 3rd if needed.

I find it very hard to believe that they are up in the air 24/7 when they are giving 13-17 min eta's on a regular basis. I know the new birds have a longer start up time which is a whooooooooole other topic.

ligsar, I'm not sure if you are saying they are up 24/7 during the summer time or all year round but with 14 min eta's on every request, I don't see how a chopper that is already up in the air can give a 14 min eta from islip to anywhere in suffolk county, other then the east end.

I think they always have a chopper in the air except between shifts. Because usually during medivacs it is copter # 3.
