And If I remember correctly, they had issues with the new ones a while back. There were stress cracks or something and the state and nass pd aviation were providing some coverage.

Thats interesting Dave. Never heard about that. Good cover up I guess.

I know that Nassau still provides coverage into some parts of Suffolk due to the extended ETA's of Suffolk Aviation. I remember a few weeks ago hearing an FD in the 1st division req aviation for an mva and Suffolk wouldnt fly due to weather so they called Nassau and they sent a bird. Outrageous if you ask me....

the old suffolk helos like posted by dave were stress cracks being found at the rotor housing....they did replacements for it but same problems still occured....a while back suffolk pulled all the helos out of service for intensive overhauls and stress exams

SCPD only has one ship left in their fleet that has the stress crack issue... Helo #2, the remaining MD-902 ship. It is due to be replaced with a Eurocopter 145 in 2010-11. The other 3 ships have no such problems.

As for Suffolk vs Nassau aviation, Suffolk is typically abit more conservative when it comes to flying in inclement weather than Nassau. Suffolk aviation also prefers not to fly into NUMC.

At the taxpayers expense, I am glad they choose what is more convenient for them...lol

Understood about the weather but boy, are they snobby.

Suffolk Aviation Base is located at MacArthur Airport with 3 helicopters I believe
Suffolk Aviation Base East staffs 1 helicopter out of Gabreski Airport in West Hampton
Nassau base is located near the Old Grumman Plant in Bethpage staffing 4 helos.

It would be nice if the Coast Guard staffed a helo on Long Island, atleast for the summer months. The closest ones are Atlantic City and Cape Cod.

Speaking of aviation, anyone know why there is a military chopper following Scpd chopper around Islip?
