new to scanning..need an antenna

i just bought my first scanner( bct15). i have a friend who is going to program it for me. no way i could figure it out. my question is , it has a small antenna.what would be a good rooftop one to buy. i live in western nassau and would like/hope to reach nyc and suffolk. thanks all who reply

I use both a Discone and ST-2 (Scantenna). Both work well in my setting...

You can pickup the Discone from Radioshack for about $70 (plus coax, connectors and mounting).

The ST-2 can be purchased at LNL in Syosset for under $50 and it includes the coax and connectors. While at LNL you can pickup the mast and mounting options.

Both should get you into NYC and Suffolk. How far will depend on the height.

If you need help programming the BCT-15, I can also program it for you
