| I need help optimizing my desktop scanner...I want to get the best reception possible. I live in an apartment, so a "rooftop crossbow" antenna or anything similar is out of the question. Any other suggestions besides just a standard "back of unit" telecsoping antenna?

If your scanner is near a window, how about a multi band car antenna placed outside or even inside on the window sill.

A magmount scanner antenna on a file cabinet, or on the outside ontop of an Air Conditioner would work great (Remember both have metal - so it completes the antenna ground plain).
Can't do either? How about making a Twin Lead J-POLE antenna cut for the VHF and UHF Public Safety spectrum.. I've made a few in the past. They work ok for what they are.. The nice thing is you can tape them to a window and get some better range. These antennas have no gain (Same for your telescoping antenna)
Search Twin-Lead J-Pole on google for the instructions on how to create your own antenna. |

Coaxial length is not critical in mobile installations. However it is important when running a base station, especially on UHF (450-512 MHz) and higher frequencies like 800 MHz. Up in that range, you want to use a low-loss coaxial cable like Belden 9913 or hardline and keep the run as short as possible using high quality type N coax connectors.

| dispatch....the post was origionally stated hes in an apt bldg with no access to roof top antenna....i think a 9913 would be a little rouhg for him to run thru a window...thats why w2 gave the options he did |
