I am well aware of that. I was providing you with another option, thats all.
If you are looking to listen or improve UHF only, you are better off getting an antenna tuned for that band. If you are still looking to listen to everything, the 134902387 antenna's you mentioned in previous posts will all do the trick.
Unfortunately you do not have enough room in your attic as the scantenna would probably be your best bet. There was a noticeable difference in my UHF reception with that antenna.
Something else to consider is a mobile antenna. All you need to do is provide a ground plain. Considering you are working within tight guidelines, these antenna's are not usually bulky and may work for your application. |

Do you have a ground plane for them? They work on vehicles b/c the vehicle acts as a ground plane to help the signal bounce off the roof, hood or trunk of the auto. If you are using a mobile antenna and its not using any lower radials than your reception will likely suck. An air conditioner also acts as a ground plan for mag mount mobile antennas.

Grounding an antenna (to protect against lightning strikes) and having a ground plane is not the same thing. I am not sure if you understand what I'm talking about but it has nothing to do with the antenna being "grounded."
As already said in a previous post, you will likely not see much difference in reception from manufacturer to manufacturer.
The only real way to tell how much luck you'll have is to compare one vs the other. I have heard people rave about the discone antennas. For me, it does not deliver desirable results. Part of the issue may also be the coax or cable you are using. That is a whole different discussion though.....

| im telling you ...you got to use an amplifier....a radio shack catv amp will work......the only thing is you have to get connector set up from antenna coax to catv and catv to radio...inexpensive.....stop going nuts if u got it use it thats what i did the amp must be working nif i get jersey city and seaside heights in levittown from a yagi uhf at 16 ft from ground level |

While that is something i overlooked be aware that these can also amplify those bad signals. I agree this is probably the more cost effective way to look at it.
For best results with an amplifier, its best to be placed at the bottom of the antenna before the coax. Many people place the amp at the back of the scanner and all they are doing is amplifying the crap signal they are experiencing b/c of loss in the cable. This varies greatly depending on how much cable you are using and what freqs you are listening to. Again, for another topic but I wanted you to see the flip side of this.
I had this very problem and used an amp to try and overcome my poor reception and all it did was make my reception worse. I later found out it was the type of cable I was using (stock, supplied cable). |

Yes i know the difference between a ground plane and grounding.
I am going to be getting an ST2 and somehow mounting it outside. If that doesnt make a difference, which it must... i'll look at an amp |

i dont know about that luke....every 1 is doubting me on this----everything that was said on amp locations to me are up in the air....i explained my set up in previous posts....im the living proof....my amp is inside on the desk and yes its into catv splitters alot of them for all my radios and like i said if i can get seaside heights n.j and fairfield conn and some upstate depts as well from the middle of long island something must be working right...also to mention i am using regular size cable tv coax to boot....58-u
