Al, there is no need to double post.. I have removed the 2nd posting to your same question. You probably didn't get a reply because nobody reading the forums is using what you are asking.
I use only BuTel software. I have files for both the 996T and 996XT. I know you wanted to use FreeScan since it is free.
If you wanted to purchase pre-made files from me, I could provide them. If you wanted, I can see if I can convert my BuTel stuff over to Freescan for you. For pricing, please visit: [link]

Manual programming is not really a horror, if you plan it out in advance. I found that once you master the theory behind dynamic memory radios you are good to go. Using a program like FreeScan is pretty easy to use. And its is a free program. You can download it and play with it. Then decide for yourself. |

I am a Little Confused with the System and Group thing!
I know Suffolk PD is a Trunk System. and that Nesconset is Conventional.so I Know that their will 2 System on the 996. for each of them. My Problem is when adding other Conventional FD's do they get own System or Group?
For Example
Fire Dept System: Nesconset (Group) Comack (Group) Smithtown (Group) St James (Group)
or is it
Nesconset (System) Comack (System) Smithtown (System) St James (System)
Thank You! Crazy Al

here is how i setup my DMA radios for Suffolk Fire:
System: SCFD Conv Group 1: Division 1 Group 2: Division 2 etc ect Group 9: Division 9/10 Group 10: Countywide
System: SCFD Trunk Group 1: Countywide etc
You could use each town as a group as you suggested above.. That is the nice thing about the DMA scanners, you can set them up anyway. You can also throw multiple groups onto the same group key as well.
Just remember, System | |->Group | |->Frequencies |
