Hello,
My friend has recently offered to sell me his slightly used BC246T. I have been out of the scanning hobby for a while now. My question, will this scanner be able to listen to NCPD and SCPD? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Will

The BC246T is a great little radio....and is the radio I usually tell people to get if they want a feature packed radio. the only down side to the 246t is the fact that it can be a PITA to program.
The radio will do SCPD (before and after rebanding), and will currently do NCPD. There is no patch from Uniden for the rebanding, and there is no telling what Nassau does when they move to their own Trunk System.
I say go for it, and if you need help programming, feel free to ask! |

Thank you very much. I was actually considering taking the radio to you for programming. I have enough PITAs in my life! lol I will give it a shot though. Thanks again.

A couple of quick questions along the same lines -
I'm located in Huntington and wondered if the BC246T still good for picking up Police, Fire etc. in Suffolk County? (I'm unaware if any changes have occurred in the interim since time of last post above).
I'm just getting into scanning now and also thinking about picking this model up. I'm aware that it will handle the re-banding OK but is there any indication that there will be a large scale move to digital systems in Suffolk or the greater NY area that might render this analog unit obsolete?
Thanks in advance for the advice and good job on a fine site!
- Dan

The BC246T is still good at picking up the local systems. There isn't anything really on the horizon for P25 except for Nassau Police.
There is some federal activity using P25 right now, but for the most part - 99% of Nassau and Suffolk is analog.
Have you checked out the new Uniden BC346XT? One of the other members on this site has that radio, and I know he is in love with it. |

Thanks for the fast and informative response w2lie - I'll certainly take a look at the BC346XT. Having a quick look at the article I see it replaced the BC246T so I guess this model may be the way to go!
Cheers D |

Glad to hear Santa dropped off a new toy!
I suggest you take a look at software to program the radio. Try Butel's software at [link] You get a 30 day trial on the software, and that should get you at least playing with the radio. If you wanted to purchase the software later on, I do sell it on here.
Enjoy your scanner.. And Merry Christmas
