I have been listening to scanner for 35 years . Over that time I have owned many different models. I currently use a BC9000XLT and a PRO95 . Next week I will be purchasing my first digital scanner , it will be a BCD396XT . I have a few questions . First , do I need any of this scanner software to program this scanner ? What does the software do and how easy or difficult is it to use ? Second , I have always programmed my scanners myself and I don't mind doing it , so I dont know much about downloading frequencies from websites . Can I control what bank they go in and will the text be included in the download . Will the talkgroups be included in trunked systems ?
I'm just used to the old fashioned way , so I hope these aren't dumb questions .
Thanks in advance for the assistance , Don

Congrats on your new Scanner.

The radio can be programmed by hand, but it takes careful planning since your looking at a whole new animal.

This scanner uses DMA technology, so you can have 1 bank with 10 frequencies, and 1 bank with 200 frequencies - with out loosing any memory locations.

Each Bank is a "System" and in each "System" is a "Group" You put your frequencies into the "Groups".
For trunking, you have your "System" in each system you have a "Site". Systems can have multiple Sites. In each system you also have your "Groups" where you put your Talk Groups into.

I would strongly suggest using software. I use the ARCXT software (which you can purchase on this site - or download a demo first) and try it out. You'll see that the graphical setup is much easier to understand.

As far as the rest of your questions, the answers are YES. If you purchased a membership to Radio Reference, or if you purchased the pre-made files from my site, you can choose your bank, and all conventional and trunk systems are included.

I hope this has helped.

If you just wanted to use it to program the radio, then you can get away with the basic version.

I believe it means you can plug the scanner into the PC, and you'll see a graphical version of the scanner on your desktop.

It is a nice feature if you wanted to see what the radio was doing from across the room, or via a Virtual Desktop connection.

I know people who use that because it is easier for them to see that screen, then to get their glasses on to read the little radio.
