I should have never sold my Pro95 . This BCD396 is a horror (my wife said I was growling at the computer) . I have had it about a week now and I still cannot get it going. I purchased the ARC XT Basic , installed it , downloaded the driver for the usb cable plugged the scanner into the computer like it said to do , I went to download the Suffolk Trunked system from Radio Reference and now it says it cannot find a port . I went into the help manual and it says I must check the software settings and start the software (i did) and select BCDXT RS232 setup from the menu . Where would this be ? I dont see this anywhere . Any help is appreciated .

Go to "Control Panel"
then System
then Hardware
then Device manager
look for com port and check your settings in the advanced tab

For windows machine - you may need to tell the software what port you are using.

You could also try Freescan - do a google search

Did you try clicking the Auto Detect Scanner box?

Scanner -> Communication Setup
(That opens a new window)

Then click the green "Auto Detect" Button

Thank you for the assistance , that did work for the most part .It worked for everything that is available in the ARC XT program , but there are some things that are not available (or I just can't find them) . I cannot find the NYSPD Troop L or the LIRR PD and operations / maintenance frequencies in the ARC XT program . I went to the Radio Reference web site and found them and clicked "download to scanner" but it just takes me to another pagethat shows to have your scanner hooked up to the computer (which i do) but thats it , there not a "continue" button to click .How would I do this ? I truly apologize for being a pain in the *** but this is all new technology to and old mind . Thank you !
