Port Washington FD VHF

Port Washington will be following Manhasset Lakeville by moving to a VHF repeater and leaving 46.12 in the near future. As of now, they still plan on having the county dispatch for them.
They have a license for 153.770 at 60 Watts, not sure if this is what they will be using or if they are going to upgrade their license for more power on their other VHF channels. Anyone from the North Shore have any insight?

I heard that they will be using 159.1725 (466) as their main freq

Ahh, you're probably right. They have a license for 60 watts on that frequency.

Ill plug it into the scanner and see what I get. Should relieve a ton of traffic on 46.12 between them and MLFD. Although, Nassau has become even more complex to operate in between depts on low band, VHF and UHF. Motorola must be happy selling all of the high priced dual band radios!

Not sure why they wouldn't go UHF, but with these new ($$$) dual/tri band radios - i guess it's no longer an issue.
Still boggles my mind how Firecom monitors all of these dept freqs, it must be a daunting task.
I wonder if Nassau Firecom plans to move off low band for battalion ops (46.12,20,32) as they seem to be migrating to all UHF paging now that Motorola doesn't support low band paging anymore.

It's almost impossible to get a UHF freq these days so if they had that VHF channel in the bank, they probably stuck with it. Also, their fireground (as well as the 3 closest departments) is VHF so if they have any older single band radios they can still use it for both FG and Disp. Although, they have been simulcasting tone outs for over a year on Nassau's UHF 453.875.
As of now, I don't think Nassau has any/enough UHF high power frequencies to simulcast 12,20 and 32. However many departments have put up lower power, non-repeated (except Mineola) cross bands, it would be nice if a dept with high power channel gave it over to the county so they could actually establish a real plan to go UHF, instead of these ineffective cross bands that really aren't high up enough to work well. You really need to be up on a water tower or radio tower to get sufficient coverage over a couple of miles... But when have any depts worked together in the fire service.
Although, I do think that having PWFD off 46.12 will actually be easier for firecom as they wont have depts like Bayville and South Farmingdale stepping on PWFD because they can't hear them transmitting because of the distance.

As far as distance, stepping on each other on low band. Firecom has low band sites spread throughout the county. Specifically, those towns you mentioned all have (or used to have) remote low band Firecom sites (Pt. Wash, Bayville and South Farm). I'm pretty certain those sites are still active, along with prob an additional 10 more or so. If my memory serves me correctly, some others are Mineola, Westbury, East Meadow, RVC, Pt. Lookout, Jericho, Levittown, Uniondale, Franklin Sq, Floral or NHP.
So if Firecom is monitoring a call for PWFD off the Port Wash Tower, theoretically, South Farm shouldn't been stepping on them, as they're a good distance away from PW.
I was just saying, between all the county low band freqs, and all the FD VHF/UHF they have to monitor - Firecom has a lot to listen to! Wouldn't want to be on the Firecom radio during a storm! LOL

Any other dinosaurs remember loading only 46.10 and 46.12 into their scanners and being pretty much finished with programing NC fire departments? Dispatchers would have to tell their units to, "Stay off the air unless urgent. Westbury (for example) has a working fire." My little Radio Shack "base" (LOL) unit could only hear most of the the sixth and ninth battalions from south Hicksville. 620 used signals 21 and 22 for "responding" and "arrived" and 930 would be "7" and "17" for the same message. I think signal 10 was shared but almost everything else was battalion designated. I forget when everyone got together and started using common signals.
